More than 10-thousand residents believe the state of Missouri should secede from the United States. A petition for secession is one of nearly two dozen posted on the White House’s official website. The petitions need to gather 25-thousand signatures within 30-days to draw an official response from the White House. More than ten-thousand have already electronically signed Missouri’s petition. Arkansas’s petition has drawn 12 thousand signatures, and Texas passed the 25-thousand threshold in three days.

An online government website called “We the People” cites the Declaration of Independence that governments derive their powers from the consent of the governed…”(t)hat whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government.”

17 of the states with petitions on the site voted for Romney in the November 6th election.

Other states with secession petitions include: Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma.
